How We Started
Originally founded in 1973 as the Steuben County Humane Society, the Community Humane Shelter of Steuben County exists to find homes for animals in Steuben County, Indiana; promote the humane treatment of animals, including spaying and neutering; and assist in the prevention of animal cruelty and neglect. The Community Humane Shelter of Steuben County is a private, 501(c)3 nonprofit that operates an animal shelter, which means that we accept any cats and dogs, without bite risks and other non-adoptable animals, brought to the shelter by a Steuben County resident, care for its needs, and help secure it a good forever home. To provide these services, we rely on donations and grants from our generous supporters to provide care for over 2,000 animals every year.
